Filipka Rutkowska, The Miner’s Daughter, performance, 2025
April 13, 2026, 7:00 PM
In The Miner’s Daughter, the artist returns to her teenage years, growing up in a working-class family and discovering art in an environment devoid of artistic and intellectual traditions. Filipka recalls her first drawing lessons and copying famous European works – activities that allowed her to better understand art history. Twenty years later, s/he reinterprets this gesture through a class-based lens. During the performance, s/he reads a story about her adolescence, changes, and impossible transformations, paying tribute to her family’s working-class history.
The performance was commissioned by Jasna 10: Społeczna Instytucja Kultury Krytyki Politycznej in Warsaw, 2025.
Filipka Rutkowska, Cat on a Hot Wooden Raft, performance, 2024
April 25, 2026, 6:30 PM
The performance reflects on the artist’s intimate encounters with immigrants and refugees from the Middle East and North Africa who have recently arrived in Europe. Using sexuality as a source of knowledge, the work creates subtle connections between the experiences of vulnerability and social exposure of LGBTQ+ individuals and the experiences of migration. Flea market objects, linked to Europe’s colonial past, are paired with charcoal portraits of anonymous lovers whose legal uncertainty prevents them from revealing their identities. The work unfolds to the soundtrack of the film Casanova, in which free love transcended social and national boundaries. In contrast, the performance highlights how the contemporary migration crisis reveals the harshness of Europe’s borders.
The performance was commissioned by the Labirynt Gallery in Lublin.
Filipka Rutkowska, The Fantastic Life of Baroness Munchausen, performance, 2025
May 12, 2026, 8:00 PM
The performance is based on a voice diary in which the artist documents a sudden shift toward self-care after years of excessive behaviour. Through short, intimate recordings, s/he confronts the issue of addiction and reflects on the process of recovery outside of institutional therapy. Rather than promoting conventional wellness culture, the work restores value to a period marked by the use of psychoactive substances, while humorously portraying the worlds of art, literature, theatre, film, and her own media presence from the perspective of sobriety. The title of the work refers to the character of Baron Munchausen. His impossible attempt at self-rescue becomes a metaphor for the artist’s effort to break free from addiction through storytelling. The work explores the process of reclaiming oneself without erasing the past, transforming the past excessive behaviour into material for growth rather than a source of shame.
The performance was commissioned by Konteksty 2025 – Festival of Ephemeral Art, Sokołowsko.
