Event in connection with the exhibition

The artist talk by Pascale Monnin within the exhibition space is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Haitian art from a person who has known and exhibited with many of the artists, whose works are included in the show. Born into a Swiss family in 1974 in Pòtoprens, Monnin grew up between Yverdon in Switzerland, where she attended school, and Haiti, where she returned every summer. Her family founded the now widely-recognised Galerie Monnin in Pétionville in 1947 to popularise Haitian art around the world. The artist moved there in 1994 to help her father run the gallery.

Monnin’s artistic practice spans a wide variety of topics and employs several techniques ranging from paintings to collaborative installations made together with specific communities. There is a wide interpretative scope for the work “Creating Beauty With What is Broken” exhibited here, but perhaps the most telling is the artist’s own note in her portfolio. The materials used are “cement and glass… that which killed as it fell down” during the 2010 earthquake. The sculpture—a lone head—poignantly draws attention to the individual when considering a tragedy that killed so many that from a distance might appear as an unidentifiable, nameless crowd.
