Purification, washing, brainwashing and other forms of cleaning – from the bursts of energy to lyricism
In the latest work by Alice Ripoll and Cia REC, reality and fantasy mix in a delirious atmosphere reminiscent of an apocalyptic dream.
Thanks to the use of simple props such as buckets, water and soap, the performers critically explore the act of purification and its scenic, cultural and historical patterns, in order to create multi-faceted poetic images of exodus, transgression, rituals, rebirth and resistance.
Lavagem refers to an ancestral past full of struggle, but also pleasure and joy of life. In Brazilian Portuguese, the word “lavagem” means cleanliness, the act of cleaning, hygienization, but it also means pigswill. “Lavagem de dinheiro”, or money laundering, is an expression used to disguise the illicit origin of revenues. “Lavagem cerebral”, or brainwashing, is what you do to force someone to think a certain way. “Alma lavada”, or cleansed soul, means we have experienced great relief and now feel peaceful, with no pending matters to resolve.
After the performance, AFTER TALK with the artists, hosted by Katarzyna Sloboda, PhD.
