Galeria Studio in Warsaw presents the “Gender Is Over” – the first institutional solo exhibition by Filipka Rutkowska. Alongside the artist’s works, the show will also feature pieces by Paweł Althamer, Hanayo, and Dawid Nickel.
Opening: April 13, 2026, 7:00 PM
Galeria Studio, Plac Defilad 1, Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw
Filipka Rutkowska, an artist from Silesia, has been transforming her own identity into an artistic medium for nearly two decades. Her works document life, experiences, and contradictions, intertwining personal stories, class sensitivity, and social observations. As she says: “Identity is an entanglement of multiple conditions and processes, of contradictory forces that make us interesting and free.” The presence of works by other artists broadens the context of the exhibition and builds a polyphonic narrative around the experience of identity and otherness.
The exhibition presents three main stages of the artist’s practice. Early works, created from 2008 onward, take the form of intimate notes and “sorting of thoughts,” which, when confronted with the viewer, acquire new meanings. The next stage includes notebooks from her student years (from 2010), where themes of love, sexuality, and early formal experiments – such as collage – emerge, giving rise to personal narratives. The most recent works, from 2020 onward, include assemblages, collages, installations, and performative actions, in which queer social critique and reflections on art history intertwine with everyday life. As the artist emphasizes: “Every fragment of my life, every gesture, every memory becomes part of a performance – and the exhibition is the place where these elements meet the audience.”
In “Gender Is Over”, Filipka Rutkowska deconstructs her identity, presenting it as a dynamic social archive. Every experience and every story becomes part of the performance, and the audience becomes a participant in this experiment. The artist’s Silesian roots, working-class heritage, and engagement with everyday reality permeate each work, creating a language that connects personal, social, and political narratives in a unique, humorous, and sensitive way.
The exhibition will be on view until July 5, 2026.
