What is on the mind of a woman who isn’t running away although she can see the tornado approaching? What a girl sees when standing on the edge of an “unsinkable” ship? Why was this particular man chosen to save the world? And when he puts a drill to an asteroid, will he shed even a single tear?
The creators of the play examine tropes from such films as “Armageddon”, “Titanic”, “Twister” and “Interstellar” driven by disaster narratives. These films use suspense before the event to tell stories of romances, misalliances and heroism. “A Beautiful Beginning” is an attempt to evoke images that are impossible and that break old conventions, inspired by scenes which could have happened off camera and without witnessed. Fantasies and confabulation about what we cannot see before the end will allow us to appreciate the creative potential of a disaster. It is precisely a disaster, understood as a coup, that can give us a brand new, beautiful beginning.
The play is based on actors’ improvisations as well as the script written by Daria Sobik.
